COURT SENTENCE EVANS CHUKWUDIMEME ONWUAMADIKE TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT

Justice Hakeem Oshodi of the Lagos high court, Ikeja finds Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike (alias Evans) and two of his accomplices - Uche Amadi, and Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu, guilty of two counts of criminal conspiracy and kidnapping. The judge convicted the three men after finding that the state government provided overwhelming evidence to prove it case against them. The three other co-defendants, Ogechi Uchechukwu, Chilaka Ifeanyi and Victor Aduba were discharged of the alleged Crimes. The court declared that the prosecution didn’t succeed in proving their guilt beyond reasonable grounds. A verdict on sentencing is slated to be delivered in an hour after the court heard arguments by counsel for the state government and the defendants on whether to commit them to custodial sentencing. RUSSIA BAN BRITISH AIRLINES FROM IT'S AIRSPACE

British airlines have been banned from landing at Russia's airports and from crossing its airspace, the Russian civil aviation regulator has said. Russia said the move was a response to "the unfriendly decisions by the UK aviation authorities". On Thursday, the UK banned Russia's national airline Aeroflot from landing in Britain. The measure was part of sanctions introduced following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace told ITV: "I think that's their retaliation for us yesterday banning Aeroflot from using and landing in the United Kingdom. That's their tit for tat response." PRESIDENT BUHARI SIGN ELECTORAL BILL INTO LAW

President Muhammadu Buhari has finally signed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law. The President assented to the bill at past midday on Friday at a brief ceremony held at the Council Chamber of the Aso Villa in Abuja. The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo; President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, witnessed the signing of the bill. This comes barely a week to the expiration of the window the President has to take a decision on the proposed legislation, as required by the Nigerian Constitution. Having received the bill from the National Assembly on January 31, various stakeholders including political actors and civil society groups had awaited its signing into law by the Nigerian leader. BORIS JOHNSON GOVERNMENT GRANT VISA EXTENSION TO UKRAINIANS IN UK

Priti Patel today announced Ukrainians who have work, study or visiting visas in the UK will have their stays extended to ensure they are not forced to go home amid the Russian invasion. The Home Secretary said the visa concession will 'provide certainty to our Ukrainian friends and colleagues living, working and studying in the UK'. Ms Patel said Britain will continue to 'stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine' after Vladimir Putin launched military action against his neighbour. The move means Ukrainians with a valid visa in the UK will have their visa temporarily extended or they will be able to switch onto an alternative visa route. Ms Patel said in a statement issued this evening: 'We stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine amid this unprovoked and antidemocratic act of Russian aggression. A man identified as Wisdom Joseph allegedly strangled his wife identified as Evelyn Alifiya to death in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city. A source who narrated the incident stated that after some month into Marriage wisdom moved into his wife’s apartment in lugbe, citing jobless as the reason. Evelyn who is from Kogi state took responsibility for Wisdom’s upkeep, Feeding, clothing and shelter. However, Wisdom who is from Abia state will constantly beat Evelyn and would threaten to take her life. According to reports, Evelyn told his family member about it and they intend to move her out of the house. On Saturday evening she found out that wisdom had a gun in his bag. It was gathered that Evelyn tried to report the incident to her sister so they could both go to the police station and report but unluckily for her wisdom noticed that Evelyn had seen his Gun. COURT TO HEAR ABBA KYARI BAIL APPLICATION FEB. 28

Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, has fixed February 28, to hear the bail application filed by detained former Commander of Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Force Intelligence Bureau, Nigerian Police Force, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari. Justice Ekwo fixed the date on Thursday, after counsel to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mike Kassa had informed the court that the bail application was not served on him. Kassa said though the applicant’s counsel served him with a motion on notice, he was yet to be served with the bail application. However, Kyari’s counsel, Cynthia Ikenna insisted before the court that there is a proof of service to that effect. Ikena prayed the court to confirm the proof of service in the court file. After going through the court file, Justice Ekwo directed the applicant’s lawyer, Ikenna to serve Kassa in open court. Meanwhile, the court has adjourned to February 28, to hear Abba Kyari’s bail application.

NIGERIA GOVERNMENT TO EVACUATE CITIZENS IN UKRAINE AS WAR ESCALATES

The Nigerian Government has announced intentions to evacuate its citizens in Ukraine following an invasion by Russia, POLITICS NIGERIA has learned. The Federal Government of Nigeria is planning for special flight operation to evacuate her citizens from Ukraine in view of the escalating tension between that country and Russia. Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama in an interview with NTA said the Nigerian embassy in Kiev has been contacted to arrange those wishing to the return home from other areas including Donestk and Luhensk. The minister assured Nigerians that the ministry is following the event since beginning and promised to do everything for the safety of Nigerians in Ukraine, particularly students. The Russians have started attacking military installations in Ukraine amidst worries and accusations by the western world of imminent invasion which President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly denied.
