Ishaq Usman Bello, chief judge of the federal capital territory (FCT) high court, was not elected as a judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC). This was disclosed in the results of the election which was concluded on Thursday and made available on the ICC website. President Muhammadu Buhari had nominated Bello as Nigeria’s candidate on June 20. According to the results, Bello polled 12 votes–the second lowest–only after Milandou Prosper, nominee from The Republic of Congo, out of 117 in the first round of the election. In the second round, Bello garnered only 5 votes out of 110 votes. The ICC advisory committee on the nomination of judges had earlier ranked Bello low in October, giving the indication that he may not be selected in the final election. Thousands of applicants, who were shortlisted by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to fill positions for the experienced cadre, have written an open letter to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), alleging foul play. The applicants said while those who applied as graduate trainees had already been employed, others who applied for the experienced category had not been contacted by the NNPC since June 2019 when they sat exams. The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami, has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to remove the N20 USSD fee imposed on subscribers for National Identification Number (NIN) retrieval requests. This directive came following the outrage across the country from subscribers who were charged N20 by their network providers in order to retrieve their NIN.
